This lab will cover the top five behavioral tips all cat parents should know. In this laboratory we will cover the essentials of proper feline behavioral husbandry and care – i.e. the information veterinarians and staff members should be discussing with new kitten/cat parents. Questions we will address include:

  • What is the best litterbox?
  • What type of toys should I get and how should I play with my cat?
  • How do I get my cat to like visitors and my other cats?
  • How do I prevent my cat from scratching the furniture?
  • How do I get my cat used to having her nails trimmed and being brushed?

Information will be put into practical use through demonstrations using kittens and adolescent cats.  Different types of toys and play will be demonstrated as well as desensitization to handling for nail trims and pilling.

General conference registration is required to attend laboratory sessions.

Urinary Program Objectives
• Understand common indications for cystoscopy, urethroscopy and vaginoscopy in female dogs
• Understand common indications for cystoscopy, urethroscopy and prepucoscopy in male dogs
• Discuss and practice appropriate scope handling and technique for performing uroendosopy in male and female dogs
• Discuss and practice performance of biopsy during uroendoscopy in male dogs
• Review use of cystoscopes during small diameter stone removal, voiding hydropropulsion and foreign body removal
• Discuss how to incorporate uroendoscopy into a complete workup from beginning to end, including multi-modal imaging (i.e. ultrasound and radiography)

Respiratory Program Objectives
• Understand the common indications for rhinoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy, and bronchoscopy
• Learn proper scope handling technique for rhinoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy, and bronchoscopy
• Learn biopsy techniques for rhinoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy, and bronchoscopy
• Practice bronchoalveolar lavage technique for bronchoscopy

1:00pm-4:00pm Lecture for VETS

A dynamic lecture series presentation utilizing intraoral clinical radiographs will be presented in order for the veterinarian to understand, learn, and enhance interpretation of intraoral radiographs in the dog and cat. The importance and necessity of intraoral radiographs will be presented by using clinical case examples. Normal radiographic dental anatomy to abnormal pathology will be presented to prepare the participant to learn how to assess and make radiographic diagnoses. Additionally, clinical treatment recommendations based on the intraoral radiographic abnormalities will be presented. The image-based lectures will be supplemented with comprehensive notes so that the participants can focus on the images, content, and learning during the lectures. Participants will interact in a self-assessment and review.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn to recognize normal roentgen anatomy of the dentition and the related periodontal structures, endodontic structures, and maxillofacial bone in the dog and cat.
2. Participants will learn the correct labial mounting technique for viewing intraoral radiographs.
3. Participants will learn roentgen signs of periodontal disease, endodontic disease, feline tooth resorption, canine tooth resorption, neoplasia, and common oral/dental pathology.
4. Participants will learn recommended treatments for the radiographically identified dental and oral pathology.
5. Participants will learn the clinical value and necessity of intraoral radiographs in clinical practice.
