- Continuing education at our annual conference in November and events held throughout the year. Discounted registration and digital access to past conference proceedings available to all active members.
- Advocacy and legislative representation both at the state and national levels. The HVMA advocates on behalf of the veterinary profession in Hawaii. In 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, HVMA immediately pushed for designation of veterinarians in Hawaii as essential workers.
In recent years we have won Good Samaritan and animal abuse reporting protections, and updated the Veterinary Practice Law (HRS471) to address veterinary telemedicine, reinforce the importance of the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR), and allow for temporary license permits for out-of-state veterinarians as well as emergency response assistance.
This year we are advocating to preserve xylazine access for veterinarians (particularly critical in large animal medicine), expand access to compounded medications, and prohibit pet surgeries performed by non-veterinarians. - Communication via quarterly newsletters, email updates, and social media posts to update on current events and discuss concerns of the HVMA membership.
