Aleisha Swartz, DVM

Dr. Swartz graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, beginning in small animal private practice before following her passion into shelter medicine in 2010. She has worked with nonprofits, large municipal shelters, smaller private rescues, and community outreach programs that provide spay and neuter services. She has implemented medical protocols, conducted staff trainings, participated in transport programs and animal cruelty work, and helped advocate for and establish HQHVSN.
A 2014-2015 HSUS UW Shelter Medicine fellow, Dr. Swartz is excited to be back working with the UW team. She was recognized by the University of Georgia as one of the Top 40 Under 40 graduates in 2014 and participated in the AVMA Future Leaders program in 2015-2016. She is currently Vice President of the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association and a member of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.
Dr. Swartz’s goal is to improve the level of care for both animals in the shelter as well as those living in the community, and has a special interest in encouraging shelter staff to become effective and engaging leaders who make a big impact in their communites. She currently shares her home with her husband, 2 dogs, 2 cats, several fish, and a variety of foster animals.
Andrew J. Rosenfeld, DVM, Diplomate ABVP
Dr. Rosenfeld is the Medical Director of Abaxis Global Diagnostics and has spoken on numerous occasions on topics in Emergency Medicine, Small Animal Anatomy and Physiology, and Cardiology. Dr. Rosenfeld has been medical director of many facilities, his last position was medical director of VCA Boston Road Animal Hospital, a specialty, emergency and wellness hospital. He was Director of Technical Education for the Pet’s Choice family of veterinary hospitals and specialty practices.
Dr. Rosenfeld has practiced small animal critical care and emergency medicine for 25 years. He is a member of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and was an adjunct professor at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University. Dr Rosenfeld is also authoring a text for veterinary hospitals called The Veterinary Team Handbook from Blackwell Press, and is co-authoring a textbook in clinical pathology called Clinical Pathology for the Veterinary Team (Blackwell – 2009).
Audrey Cook, BVM&S, DACVIM (SA Internal medicine), DECVIM (CA), DABVP (Feline)
Audrey Cook graduated with distinction from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, followed by an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at North Carolina State University and a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of California at Davis.
Dr. Cook owned a specialty referral practice in Newport News, Virginia, then joined the faculty at Texas A&M as an Associate Professor in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Her particular interests include endocrinology and gastroenterology.

Ms. Crowell has been an ABCDT certified dog trainer since 2006. She has experience working with and training large animal exotics; bears, lions, tigers, and leopards. She previously worked as a Registered Veterinary Technician in general practice, implementing puppy classes and preventative behavior techniques in the veterinary setting. For the past three years, she has worked with Dr. Karen Sueda in the Behavior Department of VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, helping clients implement behavior treatment plans and behavior modification. She is working toward her VTS specialty in behavior. Ms. Crowell loves working with owners and pets to enhance the human-animal bond. She currently has 3 dogs, 2 cats and 1 small child “in training” in her own home.
Carolyn Naun, DVM
Dr. Naun is the owner of Arms of Aloha, the first veterinary hospice practice in Hawaii. She is enrolled with the first cohort of veterinarians who will achieve certification in Animal Hospice and Palliative Care by the spring of 2017. She has previously taught anesthesia, dentistry and surgical nursing to veterinary technology students.
Dr. Naun has always been interested in promoting animal welfare and the human-animal bond. She is passionate about client education and evidence-based integrated medicine, and is excited to foster the revolutionary turn in pain management and end-of-life care that is currently taking place in the veterinary profession.

Carrie R. White DVM, DACVIM
Carrie White graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. This was followed by a small animal rotating internship at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, Connecticut, and an internal medicine residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She became a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2009.
She stayed on as a staff internist at the AMC from 2009-2012. In 2013, she moved back to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she grew up, and she is currently an internist and medical director at VCA Oahu Veterinary Specialty Center. Carrie’s professional interests include hematology and infectious disease.
James Atherton, DVM, MS, DACVR
Jeff A. Hall, DVM
Dr. Hall received his DVM and completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Following his internship, he practiced in an exclusively equine surgical and ambulatory practice in Oregon for over 10 years.
Dr. Hall joined the Zoetis Equine Technical Service team in 2012. As a senior veterinarian, he consults with practitioners across the United States, develops and supports equine research projects with several colleges of veterinary medicine, and provides continuing education on numerous equine topics. His particular areas of focus include equine pain and sedation, infectious diseases, and preventative health care.
Dr. Hall and his wife Dr. Chea Hall, a small animal practitioner, reside in San Luis Obispo, California with their two sons where they enjoy scuba diving, soccer, baseball and taking their golden retriever, Maverick, to the beach.
John J. McDonnell, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology)
Dr. Jay McDonnell is a board-certified veterinary neurologist with more than 25 years of clinical experience and has been practicing in Maryland since 2004.
Formerly the chief of Neurology-Neurosurgery at Tufts University, Dr. McDonnell helped establish the in-house magnetic resonance imaging suite, a brain surgery unit and minimally invasive CT-guided biopsy program at the university. Since moving to Maryland in 2004, Dr. McDonnell has continued his work in the definitive treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, CNS imaging, Chiari malformation and Wobbler’s disease.
Karen Sueda, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Behaviorists
After graduating from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Karen Sueda completed an internship at the Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group in Ventura, California. She subsequently returned to UC Davis to complete a Clinical Animal Behavior Residency and became a board-certified Veterinary Behaviorist in 2007. In addition to seeing veterinary behavior cases throughout Southern California, Dr. Sueda has served as President and member of the Executive Board of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Dr. Sueda’s special interests include feline behavior, canine anxiety disorders and the human-animal bond. She credits her cat Tyler for teaching her more about feline behavior and training than any textbook.
Kazunari Ibaraki DVM
Dr. Ibaraki graduated from Veterinary School of Hokkaido University. He works as a general practitioner at Ibaraki Animal Clinic in Yokohama, Japan. He also works as translator and interpreter of veterinary books, seminars and meetings more than 10 years. He is interested in Clinical Pathology, Endocrinology and Oncology
Kenneth W. Kwochka, DVM, DACVD
Dr. Kwochka is Veterinary Manager of Health and Wellness at Bayer Animal Health. He has been involved in all phases of veterinary medicine over the last 35 years, including 16 years as the Chief of Dermatology at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM degree from the University of Missouri and completed a Residency in Veterinary Dermatology at the University of Florida.
Dr. Kwochka is the President of the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology and has served as President of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. He is a Fellow of the Morris Animal Foundation, recipient of the Stanford University School of Medicine Outstanding Veterinary Dermatologist Award and recipient of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology Award of Excellence, for contributions to science and education in the specialty.
Leigh Ann Clayton, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Avian and Reptile/Amphibian)
Dr. Leigh Clayton has been Director of Animal Health at National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland for 11 years. She has a long-standing commitment to enhancing the medical care and welfare of all species with a particular focus on fish, amphibians, and reptiles.
She is always excited to connect with other veterinarians interested in advancing wild animal and exotic pet veterinary care. For over a decade, she has lectured at national and international scientific and continuing education conferences and has authored or co-authored over 30 journal or textbook publications.
She earned her DVM from Tufts University in 1997. She completed a number of post-graduate training programs including the Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC, the Zoo and Aquarium Medicine Internship at Lincoln Park Zoo and John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, and the Avian/ Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Residency at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Lam is a board certified surgeon at VCA Oahu Veterinary Specialty Center. He earned his DVM at Michigan State University in 2009. After completing a Small animal Medicine and Surgery internship at University of Pennsylvania in 2010 and a Small Animal Surgery residency at The Animal Medical Center in New York City in 2013, he is happy to call Hawai’i home.
Dr. Lam has lectured locally and internationally and authored publications on emergency surgery, interventional radiology, esophageal disease, and avian surgery. His professional interests include minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology, oncology, trauma, and exotic animal surgery. He is committed to improving veterinary care and enhancing the human-animal bond through education and service.
In his spare time, Dr. Lam is an avid traveler who enjoys the outdoors with his dog Cali, fishing, community service, and enjoying food in the company of good friends.
Sandra L. Hudson BS, MBA, CCRP
Ms. Hudson has been a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner since 2003 and the owner of the Canine Rehabilitation and Conditioning Center of Texas since 2002.
Sandra is one of the first to become a Certified Canine Rehabilitation and is recognized nationally and internationally in the area of canine and feline exercise therapy and conditioning. She has contributed to several leading publications, including Gaynor and Muir’s Handbook of Veterinary Pain Management. Sandra is committed to continuing education and has extensive training in rehabilitation methods and modalities, including therapeutic ultrasound, cold laser therapy, aquatic therapy and exercise therapy.
Todd Duffy, DVM, DACVECC
Dr. Duffy is a 1997 graduate from the University of Illinois. He passed the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Board Exam in 2004. Dr. Duffy remains active with manuscript reviews, lecturing and was a contributor to the RECOVER CPR guidelines. Dr. Duffy has special interests in pain management, fluid therapy, coagulation, patient safety as well as analgesia and managing anesthesia for critical patients. In addition to providing locum clinical work, he currently works for Aratana Therapeutics as a Medical Science Liaison.
